Greetings, Village Family –
On a sunny fall day in October I stood next to D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans as he recounted what the mission of N Street Village has meant for this neighborhood over the past 45 years. He spoke of the thousands of women who have found new hope and healing here and who have inspired us with their courage and strength. And he spoke of the many founders, volunteers, staff, and other leaders whose determination and compassion continue to bring this mission to life.
It had already been an exciting morning, with photo booths and line dancing to launch our Village “SHERO Walk” in celebration of this milestone anniversary. And then, just as we announced our grand total of $100,000 raised that day, Councilmember Evans unveiled our new street sign – officially dedicating our block as N Street Village Way.
We are so proud to look up at this new sign which is much more than simply a street name – it’s a signal to those in search of help and a celebration of the pathway to recovery which is found here.
The true “Way” of our Village lies in the values that we have conveyed and proclaimed for 45 years. We make it a habit – actually, we make it a requirement – to believe in the inherent worth and immutable dignity of every woman we meet. And we honor our deep intuition that we are all more alike than we are different. We know that none of us have to look very far in our own personal histories, or in the lives of those we love, to see that we are all vulnerable to the same basic human experiences of those we serve.
Our N Street Village Way sign now proudly indicates the physical location where our values and beliefs converge, but
long before this simple street sign was unveiled, it was YOUR unstoppable spirit that made our mission into a pathway of renewal and compassion for all who walk here. You – whether a founder or partner or volunteer or alumna or staff – have made this Way possible. At least once a day a new woman arrives at our front door. We will all be here together to welcome her to our N Street Village Way.
