This month, get to know N Street Village volunteer Jane Saari. Jane was first introduced to N Street Village in 1990 when she was placed as a year-long volunteer in our recovery housing program by the Lutheran Volunteer Corps. Jane returned to our community to volunteer in 2006. She facilitates our Knit and Crochet Circle and participates in a monthly game night at Luther Place Night Shelter. Let’s get to know Jane:
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the DC area? I am originally from New York City and I moved to Washington, DC in 1990 to work with the Lutheran Volunteer Corps.
What is your favorite D.C. restaurant? I live in DuPont Circle and can be found most days having lunch at Annie’s, a “Cheers-like” restaurant where everybody knows your name.
What is the last movie you watched (and enjoyed)? My favorite movies recently have been “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Quartet.” I also enjoy “Downton Abbey.”
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at N Street Village? In 2006, I started the Knitting and Crochet Circle at N Street Village. It has been a pleasure seeing the women learn to express themselves through their work and seeing their creativity emerge.
What makes N Street Village unique to you? I think N Street Village is a wonderful place where women are able to become self-sufficient in a supportive, safe, nurturing environment. N Street Village has a special place in my heart and is an important part of my adopted extended family.
