Lynda to Share Her Story at Annual Empowerment Luncheon

Lynda Email BannerLynda was once a straight-A student with dreams of becoming a third grade teacher. But her dreams unraveled. As a teenager, she ran away from home to escape an abusive stepfather. Soon after that, she started using drugs and was living on and off the streets. Lynda became lost in addiction while cycling in and out of jail.

In February 2013, Lynda moved into N Street Village’s Recovery Housing program, a residential community where women live together and work on stabilizing their mental health and overcoming addiction. Lynda came to N Street Village determined to stay sober and stay out of jail again. And with the support of the Village community, she has done just that and so much more!

This year’s Annual Empowerment Luncheon at The Mayflower Renaissance Hotel will be Wednesday, June 18. We will be welcoming Valarie Jarrett who is the Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama as the keynote speaker AND Lynda cannot wait take the podium to share her personal success story with YOU! Please join us as we celebrate the positive changes we can make together in the lives of our city’s most vulnerable women.

N Street Village Presents The Vagina Monologues

I say vagina, you might not want to keep reading. I say vagina, and you’re starting to get uncomfortable. I say vagina, you say, “good grief, can she give it up already!?” Dare I say it one more time…I say vagina, you say MONOLOGUES!

VDAY2014logo_lg.enThat’s right; N Street Village is hosting its first production of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues on VDAY, Friday, February 14 at Luther Place Memorial Church. The doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and the performance will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are free, all are welcome, please reserve your seat today.

During my time at N Street Village, I’ve heard countless stories of struggles and challenges women in our community face. No, not everyone at N Street Village identifies as a victim or survivor of sexual violence. However, its presence does exist within our community, as well as in our city, our country, and our world.

Consider the statistic that 1 in 3 women will experience violence throughout her lifetime, which works out to over 1 billion women impacted by violence. The One Billion Women Rising for Justice Campaign and the VDAY movement began to invite women and those who love them to rise together and demand an end to violence.

Our community is excited to join in this movement with our own empowering performance of The Vagina Monologues, which focuses on embracing our bodies and ourselves—even the parts that are harder to talk about or that society doesn’t like to talk about. The show is more than a play. It’s a movement. It enables us to rise together in solidarity for love and justice.

I’ll leave you with the following to ponder, which of these statements will you hear at N Street Village Presents The Vagina Monologues show?

a. I did not think of my vagina in practical or biological terms.
b. I began to love my vagina.
c. Vaginas need comfort.
d. If your vagina got dressed up what would it wear?
e. She transformed my coochi snorcher and raised it into a kind of heaven.
