Over 125 supporters attended the grand opening of Unity Health Care’s newest primary health care center within N Street Village’s Wellness Center on October 29, 2009. “It is a great honor to partner with Unity Health Care, which will provide quality health care services to the women at N Street Village,” said Dr. Funke.
Unity Health Care at N Street Village will allow our clients to have access to a doctor and nurse two mornings a week. “This undertaking is significant, because residents will have first-hand access to care, which means that issues such as transportation and other barriers will essentially be eliminated,” said Vincent A. Keane, President/CEO of Unity Health Care.
Among the esteemed guests, who helped cut the ribbon at the grand opening, were Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans, Ugo Arinzeh, NSV’s Board Chair, and Dr. Marlene Kelley, Unity’s Board Chair. The partnership between NSV and Unity “is a terrific idea,” Councilman Evans said. He told the crowd that N Street Village “serves as a model provider for this city, region and nation.” Ugo said the Unity Clinic “has hit the ground running,” noting that 70 women have already been served. “We look forward to a long and fruitful union with N Street Village,” according to Marlene.
The women of N Street Village affirmed the new partnership with Unity Health Care. Cheryl Barnes said that “this is a marvelous undertaking,” which shows concern for our women. “The new Clinic is impressive and addresses the health problems of homeless women, who often cannot find care” said Elaine Webber. A long-time Wellness Center volunteer, Dr. Oscar Dodek, said that the partnership “is a fabulous union because the women will have an M.D. to meet their needs.”
The program and ribbon-cutting was followed by light refreshments, which allowed staffs from N Street Village and Unity Health Care and clients to get acquainted with one another. The highlight of the event was the singing of “This Little Light of Mine” by NSV’s own Bethany’s Women of Praise, joined in by the jubilant crowd. “This is a great day for our Wellness Center and the women of N Street Village,” said Sharon Watkins, RN, the Wellness Center Manager.
