Aura Cacia Brings Positive Change

N Street Village is honored to be a recipient of funding from the Aura Cacia Positive Change Project. Aura Cacia, a purveyor of essential oils, skin care oils and related products made from simple and pure botanical ingredients, awarded N Street Village $60,000 to support the expansion of the peer-led Leadership Council and deliver outreach efforts through the N Street Village Day Center.

Both projects align with Aura Cacia’s vision of helping women facing difficult life situations make transformational improvements in their lives. The Day Center welcomes women and helps them consider what changes they can make in their lives to move out of homelessness and stabilize their housing. The Leadership Council enables women to reclaim their voices and practice assertiveness and critical thinking skills.

We are excited to build a meaningful partnership with Aura Cacia, and together reach great outcomes in both programs.

Washington Times: D.C. homeless shelter raises $1.5 million for social services assistance

The District’s N Street Village charity, which works with social services to transition homeless and low-income women in the capital area to jobs and independent living, raised over $1.5 million at a fundraising gala Tuesday evening — the most successful event in the charity’s history.

Despite a late-season snowstorm, speakers and guests converged on the Marriott Marquis in Northwest for the event, which featured two-time Grammy-nominated artist Andra Day speaking and singing before nearly 1,000 guests.

“My prayer for this song that it is healing and inspiring,” Miss Day said before performing “Rise Up” with the N Street Village and Luther Place Ambassadors of Praise. “I see music in its purest form as healing, and the women at N Street Village are examples of the power of healing.”

#GivingTuesday is Here!

Marla Michelle YE BannerRight on the heels of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday,” N Street Village is proud to partner with #GivingTuesday–an international day of giving back at the start of the annual holiday season.

Join this day of giving by making your year-end gift to N Street Village TODAY!

Your gift will offer new hope and new life for women who are without a home, without a job…for women coping with trauma or with mental illness…for women without a safety net.

Thank YOU for joining us this #GivingTuesday.  You are providing much needed hope and opportunity to the nearly 1,400 homeless women who come through our doors, not just during the holidays, but every day of the year.

Behind the Scenes at &Pizza

On Tuesday, February 11, &Pizza opened its doors to N Street Village and provided our clients and residents with a VIP pizza making experience. From the homemade garlic olive oil to the sun dried tomato sauce, the ladies had many delicious &Pizza ingredients to choose from to make their own personalized pizza. After creating their personal pizza’s they worked with one of four &Pizza chefs to put the pizza through the oven and complete their pizza with the final toppings.

“This experience is something I will never forget. I liked choosing my own toppings   and watching the pizza sizzle in the hot ovens. Oh! And, the smell if the pizza was divine.” – Janet, N Street Village resident

After the pizza making process, everyone enjoyed their delicious masterpieces. Then, they went on to take Polaroid pictures to make personalize Valentine’s Day cards.

When asked about &Pizza’s relationship with N Street Village, &Pizza Community Manager Alia Khayrullina said, “It’s not just about our pizza, it’s about our relationship with the people who are part of our community. We are part of their lives as much as they are part of &Pizza.”

It was an exciting afternoon as everyone enjoyed each others company and received a rare behind the scenes look at &Pizza. Thank you to &Pizza and its staff for showing N Street Village such a wonderful time and for providing last memories!

Village Holiday Needs

By Heidi Gauthier, N Street Village Volunteer and In-Kind Gifts Coordinator

xmas_snowflake_wallpaper-normalAs the temperature grows cooler, daylight hours become scarce and fond summer memories, such as planting the Village vegetable garden, become distant. N Street Village is turning its attention to the many exciting holiday events  that provide its clients with the items they need to stay warm and joyful throughout the season. Two events that we continue to need YOUR support with is our Annual Coat Drive and Community Wish List events.

Our Annual Coat Drive provides every woman in need with a warm coat.  This year we are desperately in need of plus-sized winter coats. The sizes that we are currently looking to receive are  XL—5X (14—24W). If you would like to make a donation or purchase a plus size coat, please contact Ilana Cookler at to discuss this opportunity more.

Each year, N Street Village creates a Community Wish List to collect much-needed items to support our programs and clients.  This year, we are looking to match our Secret (or not-so-secret) Santas with each of our programs.  Consider hosting a donation drive at work, with your family and friends, or at your place of worship in support of one of our amazing program teams. Please email Ilana Cookler at to discuss adopting one of our program’s holiday needs.

Looking to volunteer this holiday season?  If you do not have the time to run an in-kind drive, please consider staying the night with us or serving dinner at the night shelter.

The night shelter is open every day of the year and we especially need coverage over the holidays. Many of our clients staying at our night shelter do not have the luxury of visiting with family during the holidays and view their fellow community members as family. We invite you to experience the magic of the community with the very special people who call N Street Village home. This year we need overnight volunteers on Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, and News Year Eve.  The night shelter is also looking for dinner servers on Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving, and the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. If you have questions regarding overnight supervision or an interest in volunteering at night the shelter during the holidays, please contact Heidi Gauthier (

From all of us at N Street Village, we wish you a very happy and safe holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in the community.

Ilana’s In-Kind Corner | Bed, Bath, & Home

IMG_1299-001Thanks to the powerful response from our last In-Kind Corner Post, our community now has plenty of supplies to assist in cleaning the Village’s living and common spaces.  N Street Village offers support to over 60% of our city’s homeless women and we rely on donated items to serve our clients and to keep our operating budget as low as possible. So how can you help us this month?

Current Need: Bedding and Bath Items

Twin Sized SheetsWe are completely out of bath towels, new twin sized sheet sets, and shower curtains.  Our goal is to provide every new resident with a fresh towel and set of sheets to welcome her into the community. “Offering hospitality in all its forms to incoming residents is our way of showing that while they stay with us, they will be given a safe and clean place to rest and recover.” says Heidi Gauthier, our Volunteer and In-Kind Gifts Coordinator. We need your support to ensure that we are able to continue to meet the needs of our community.

Please consider running a drive at your school, place of worship, or workplace and help us stock up our closet with new, unopened items.  Please contact me with any questions and to schedule a drop-off appointment.  Thanks for your support!

48 Village Hours & 1 Village Goal

June 28, 2013, Update: Amazing! Thank YOU to our Village Family who came together to raise $7,315 in just 48 hours.  Our effort to close the gap on a $25,000 matching opportunity, which will all go to support DC’s homeless and low-income women was a major success.  It truly does “Take a Village!”

A few weeks ago the the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region announced they will match all donations made to N Street Village by the end of this month (up to $25,000.)  To date, we have received nearly $17,155, but we don’t want to leave any of the matching money on the table.

That’s why we need your help to raise the final $7,845 in the next couple of days, 48 hours to be exact.  Now, can you help us achieve this goal

It Takes a Village.

VILLAGEStarting today, we are asking YOU! – Our Village Family – to come together over the next 48 hours to raise the additional $7,845.

Together we can provide D.C.’s most vulnerable women the strength of community, the hope of renewal, and the opportunity to achieve personal stability. It truly does “Take a Village.”

Please take these three actions today:

  •  Double your gift and impact by giving on our “It Takes a Village” Razoo page – donate early while matching funds last!
  • Invite 5 people to donate $20 by sending them this message: Join me in supporting DC’s homeless and low-income women with a $20 contribution to N Street Village today.  It Takes a Village!  Your contribution will be matched:
  • Share (a lot!) on Facebook and Twitter
Example Twitter message:  .@NStreetVillage has 48 hours to raise $7,845.  #TakesAVillage.  Donate TODAY!  Your gift will be matched!

Example Facebook message: Join me in supporting DC’s homeless and low-income women with a $20 contribution to N Street Village today!  It Takes a Village!  Your contribution will be matched

Thank YOU for your ongoing support.  Now, let’s raise $7,845 together!
It Takes a Village.

“We want N Street Village to be there.”

McDaniel, DaleDale McDaniel has been a part of the N Street Village community since the beginning. He was a parishioner at Luther Place Memorial Church when Pastor John Steinbruck and his wife, Erna founded N Street Village with support from Jewish and Catholic congregations to respond to the  poverty and homelessness facing the Logan Circle neighborhood following the 1968 riots. He has seen N Street Village grow into something much greater than the founders could have hoped for. Reflecting on his involvement, he notes that “I have received far more than I have given when I see and hear how the women of N Street Village have regained control of their lives.”

That’s why he and his now deceased wife Deanna decided to include N Street Village in their planned giving. As much as he hopes the issue of homelessness will no longer a problem, he is realistic and wants N Street Village to continue meeting the needs of homeless women after he dies. Working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Foundation, they created two planned vehicles to benefit N Street Village—a charitable gift annuity and charitable remainder trust. Dale notes that there are many other ways to make a planned gift including simply writing N Street Village into your will.

N Street Village is grateful to Dale and Deanna for their planned gifts. Through their generosity, they will ensure that N Street Village will be there for the homeless women of Washington, D.C. for many years to come.
