A Walk Captain Story: Mary Virginia

IMG_7306Mary Virginia is excited to be walking in her third N Street Village Community Walk. She’ll be ready. Every day regardless of the weather she walks three blocks to stay in shape and maintain her health.

For Mary Virginia, this year’s walk is an opportunity for the N Street Village community—clients, staff, and volunteers—to come together as one. She knows firsthand the power of that community. In 2006, while a resident of the Village’s Luther Place Night Shelter, she was diagnosed with cancer.  While receiving chemotherapy she knew she had a place to rest and a community that supported her through a very difficult process.

Seven years later, Mary Virginia remains cancer-free. She is now a resident of our permanent supportive housing program. She gives back to the community by serving as a volunteer receptionist in our Wellness Center and escorting other clients to their appointments. The Community Walk is another way for Mary Virginia to help the community that helped her. Walk with her and be a part of our community walk.

Every person who joins our team, even if you cannot attend the Walk on October 19, will count towards our walker goal.  Adult walkers can register for $30 and youth walkers (25 and younger) can register for $20. If we reach our goal, the additional $20,000 N Street Village receives will allow us to provide housing and supportive services for women like Mary Virginia.  Join our team today!
